A Beginner's Guide To Cat Dental Care

Cats have a reputation for being aloof and independent, but you still need to take care of their health. Just like any other pet, cats need regular check-ups and dental care. But what does that look like? Let’s take a look at the basics of cat dental care so you can keep those sweet kitty teeth sparkling!

A Beginner's Guide To Cat Dental Care

Brushing Your Cat’s Teeth

The best way to keep your cat's teeth clean is by brushing them regularly. If you start when they're young, cats will get used to having their teeth brushed and won't mind it as much as an adult cat would. Use a soft-bristled brush designed for cats or a finger toothbrush, along with some flavored toothpaste made specifically for cats (never use human toothpaste!). Start off brushing just a couple of teeth at a time until your cat gets used to the process, then gradually increase the amount of teeth you brush until you can do the entire mouth in one session.

Regular Vet Visits

It's important that your cat has regular vet visits so they can check on their overall health, including their oral health. During these appointments, your vet may recommend additional measures such as scaling and polishing which helps remove plaque build-up from your cat's teeth. They may also suggest specific diets that are designed to reduce plaque buildup on the teeth.  Additionally, routine blood work should be done to make sure there is no underlying illness causing the dental issues.

Signs of Poor Oral Health

If your cat isn't getting regular dental care or if there are underlying illnesses causing poor oral hygiene, there are many signs to watch out for. These include bad breath, difficulty eating or chewing food, drooling or salivating excessively, bleeding gums or discolored teeth, swollen face/jaw area or refusal to eat anything hard like dry food. If you notice any of these signs it's important to take them into see their veterinarian right away so they can get the proper treatment they need!

Cat dental care is essential for keeping those sweet kitty smiles healthy and happy! Regular brushing and vet visits are key components for keeping your cat's mouth healthy and pain-free. Be sure to pay attention to any signs that could indicate poor oral hygiene so your cat can receive the treatment they need right away! With just a little bit of effort on your part, you can help ensure that your furry friend has strong pearly whites for years to come!
